Welcome to Darwin, California! This flyspeck on a map of California was not always the tiny Mojave Desert ghost town that it is today. In the 1870s, its population of 5,000 rivaled that of then Los Angeles; its mines produced the second largest amount of silver in the state; and 122 of 124 residents in its cemetery died by knife or bullet.
